Facebook Expat Groups – The Wild West

Most expats will either have been told, or have said themselves about the country they have chosen to call home: “If you don’t like it – leave”. And this is something that also definitely applies to social media and Facebook Groups in particular.

One possible reason why some expats are so aggressive on social media is that they are certain about their beliefs and opinions, and they do not tolerate any disagreement or challenge. The Odyssey Online explained that when people are certain, they throw away social grace and empathy, and they treat their opponents as enemies who do not matter.

Asian Persuasion

Let’s be real. There is a certain demographic of expat that chooses Asia as their base. You know who they are, you know why they are there and if you think you will ever get these guys to see reason online, your name better be Bob:- Hope!

Expat Trolls

There are many expat members of Facebook Groups who deliberately post provocative or offensive messages to elicit negative reactions from others. There are many reasons why these expats do this, but the most common motives are:

  • Seeking attention or validation: Expats may crave recognition or approval from their peers or online communities, and they may use trolling as a way to gain attention or popularity.
  • Expressing anger or frustration: Expats may have unresolved personal issues or grievances, and they may vent their emotions by attacking or harassing others online.
  • Having fun or boredom: Expats may find amusement or entertainment in causing trouble or chaos online, and they may enjoy seeing the reactions of their victims or bystanders.
  • Having a different opinion or perspective: Expats may genuinely disagree with the views or beliefs of others, and they may use trolling as a way to challenge or debate them.
  • Having a malicious intent or agenda: Expats may have ulterior motives or hidden interests, and they may use trolling as a way to manipulate, deceive, or harm others.

Facebook is one of the most popular and widely used social media platforms in the world, and it attracts millions of users from different backgrounds and cultures. This diversity can also create conflicts and misunderstandings among users, and it can provide opportunities for trolls to exploit.

Facebook is where hypocrisy, falseness, double standards, rumours and depression meet up for coffee.

Facebook also has features that can enable or encourage trolling, such as anonymity, public visibility, likes and comments, and algorithms that prioritize engagement over quality. Therefore, there are many expats in Facebook who seek to disrupt, offend, or influence the online discourse and community.
