Insights for Expats…

Greetings, fellow expats and those considering life abroad. I’m pleased to share a practical discovery from my recent explorations. Many wonder if it’s feasible to enjoy a quality, home-prepared meal here for as little as ₱70 – equivalent to about $1.25 USD or £1 GBP. The answer is yes, provided you seek out the right places.

Beyond the Supermarket: Embracing Local Eateries

During a visit to the S&R warehouse in Dau – a reliable source for groceries and imported items – I paused to highlight an essential “Expat Survival Tactic”: patronizing the modest street-side restaurants operated by local families. While S&R serves its purpose for everyday essentials, the true essence of Filipino cuisine, along with significant savings, lies in these unassuming establishments.

I discovered a charming spot where the Pork Adobo is prepared with care by the family matriarch, affectionately known as “Grandma.” Adhering to my KETO/Carnivore regimen, I opted out of the rice. To my delight, the proprietress included a complimentary serving of homemade Sour Pork Soup for me to sample. I complemented the meal with a cup of coffee.

Cost Analysis: Value in Every Peso

For transparency, here’s the itemized breakdown:

  • Pork Adobo: The centerpiece, rich in authentic flavor.
  • Sour Pork Soup: Provided at no extra charge.
  • Coffee: A simple yet satisfying addition.

Total: ₱70 – A modest sum for a meal that rivals home cooking in quality and warmth.

Practical Advice for Expats and Travelers

If you’re contemplating relocation overseas or already embracing the expat lifestyle, I encourage you to explore these local venues. They offer not only economical options but also an opportunity to engage with the community, enjoy fresher ingredients, and experience genuine hospitality. By choosing them, you contribute to the local economy while enhancing your own daily life.

In the accompanying video (available below or on my channel), I demonstrate this approach firsthand, visiting the eatery and explaining why it’s a worthwhile strategy for sustainable living abroad. Whether in the Philippines or elsewhere, such tactics can make your transition smoother and more enjoyable.
