If you’re looking for somewhere that combines spectacular scenery with a genuine sense of peace, Monasterio de Tarlac deserves a place on your list.
Perched high on Mount Resurrection in the Zambales Mountain Range, this Catholic monastery overlooks miles of countryside across Central Luzon. Whether you visit for religious reasons, photography, or simply to escape the crowds for a few hours, it’s one of the most impressive day trips in Tarlac Province.
A monastery above the clouds
Monasterio de Tarlac opened in 2000 as part of an eco tourism and pilgrimage site. Since then, it has become one of the province’s best known attractions while still feeling surprisingly peaceful.
The monastery is also believed to house a relic of the True Cross, which was brought to the Philippines from Germany in 2007. This has made it an important destination for Catholic pilgrims, particularly during Holy Week and other religious celebrations.
Even outside these periods, visitors come simply to enjoy the quiet surroundings and remarkable views.
What you’ll see during your visit
The grounds are beautifully maintained and easy to explore on foot.
The main church is the focal point of the complex, with smaller chapels and prayer rooms spread across the hillside. Landscaped gardens, open spaces and viewing areas provide plenty of opportunities to stop, take photographs or simply sit and enjoy the fresh mountain air.
The elevated position also makes Monasterio de Tarlac one of the best viewpoints in Central Luzon. On a clear day, the views across the surrounding mountains stretch for miles.

From above, you can appreciate how the buildings have been integrated into the landscape, surrounded by forested hills and open countryside. It offers a completely different perspective from what you experience while walking through the grounds.
Planning your visit
Monasterio de Tarlac is located in San Jose, Tarlac Province, on Mount Resurrection in the Zambales Mountain Range. The roads are accessible for most vehicles, although the final climb is steep and winding in places.
If possible, visit during the morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and visibility is often at its best. The quieter atmosphere also makes it easier to appreciate why so many people return here year after year.
If you’re travelling through Central Luzon or exploring beyond the usual tourist destinations, Monasterio de Tarlac is well worth the detour.
