When traveling abroad, it is important to take some security steps to protect yourself and your belongings. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and secure while travelling abroad.

  • Before you leave, make sure you have a valid passport and visa, if required. Check the travel advisories for your destination and register your trip with your embassy or consulate.
  • Make copies of your travel documents, such as your passport, visa, itinerary, and tickets. Leave one copy with a trusted friend or family member at home and carry another copy with you in a separate place from the originals.
  • Pack light and avoid bringing valuables or items that are irreplaceable. Use a sturdy suitcase or backpack with locks and labels. Keep your luggage with you at all times and do not accept packages or items from strangers.
  • Carry some local currency and a credit card or debit card that works internationally. Notify your bank and credit card company of your travel plans and check the fees and exchange rates for using your card abroad. See: WISE Travel CARD because it’s fantastic value for money!
  • Buy travel insurance that covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation, lost or stolen baggage, and trip cancellation or interruption. Read the policy carefully and understand what is covered and what is not.
  • Research the culture, customs, laws, and health risks of your destination. Respect the local norms and avoid offending or provoking anyone. Learn some basic phrases in the local language and carry a phrasebook or a translation app with you.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts. Avoid areas that are known to be unsafe or have high crime rates. Do not walk alone at night or in unfamiliar places. Do not display signs of wealth or flash large amounts of cash. Do not drink excessively or use drugs.

If you encounter any problems or emergencies, contact the nearest embassy or consulate of your country for assistance. They can help you with issues such as lost or stolen passports, legal troubles, medical emergencies, or evacuation plans.
