If you’ve been researching retirement in the Philippines over the last few years, there’s something you need to know.
Much of the information still circulating online is no longer accurate.
The Philippines remains one of the world’s best retirement destinations for many expats, but the country has changed. Cost of living has increased, visa rules have been updated, rental markets have tightened and some of the assumptions people make before arriving simply don’t reflect today’s reality.
That’s not a reason to avoid the Philippines.
It’s a reason to plan using current information rather than outdated YouTube videos, Facebook posts or forum discussions.
(Watch the full video below for a detailed breakdown.)
Cost of Living in the Philippines Has Changed
The Philippines is still significantly cheaper than the UK, Australia, Canada and much of Europe.
However, inflation has affected everyday life. Food costs have risen. Utility bills are higher.
Rental prices in popular expat areas such as Angeles City, Cebu and Dumaguete have increased noticeably compared with just a few years ago.
If you’re planning your retirement budget using figures from 2021 or 2022, there’s a good chance you’ll underestimate your monthly expenses.
One simple recommendation is to add around a 20% contingency to any online budget you find.
Finding Good Rental Property Takes Longer
Quality accommodation is still available.
The difference today is that demand is much stronger.
Well-maintained apartments in good locations don’t stay on the market for long.
Many new arrivals make the mistake of renting the first property they view because they’re tired after travelling.
Take your time. Spend longer researching locations before signing a lease. A little patience can save thousands of pesos and a great deal of frustration.
Philippines Retirement Visa Rules Have Been Updated
The Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV) has changed.
If you’ve been researching visa options for more than a year, make sure you’re reading the latest requirements before making any decisions.
Visa regulations can and do change, and relying on outdated information can become an expensive mistake.
Infrastructure Is Improving… But Not Everywhere
One of the biggest improvements over recent years has been infrastructure.
Internet reliability has improved in many cities. Road networks continue to expand. Areas such as Clark and Pampanga have seen significant development.
At the same time, power interruptions, traffic congestion and uneven infrastructure remain part of life depending on where you choose to live.
Location has never mattered more.
The Expat Community Is Evolving
The Philippines is attracting a different mix of foreign residents.
Traditional retirees are now joined by remote workers, digital entrepreneurs and younger professionals using Southeast Asia as a base.
That shift is changing the atmosphere in many popular expat locations. For most people, it’s a positive development. It simply means expectations need updating.
Is the Philippines Still Worth Retiring To?
Absolutely.
The reasons many people choose the Philippines remain largely unchanged.
- English is widely spoken.
- Filipinos remain among the warmest and most welcoming people you’ll meet.
- The cost of living is still substantially lower than most Western countries.
- Healthcare options continue to improve in many cities.
- For British retirees, the UK State Pension Triple Lock continues to apply while living in the Philippines.
The opportunity is still there.
The difference is that successful retirement now depends on having realistic expectations.
Final Thoughts
The biggest mistake isn’t moving to the Philippines.
It’s arriving prepared for the Philippines that existed several years ago instead of the country you’ll actually find today.
- Do your research.
- Check current visa rules.
- Review up-to-date living costs.
- Build a financial buffer into your retirement plans.
Those simple steps can save months of unnecessary stress and help you settle into your new life with confidence.
